WEM Carnival will not be taking place this year following a decision by the committee.

The event was due to take place on Saturday, September 5, but fears over the health and safety of participants has necessitated the cancellation.

Organisers say the move comes with a "heavy heart" but they add they are looking forward to next year's event.

A spokesman for the carnival said: "Wem Carnival Committee has now had the opportunity to review the latest guidance from the government and held an Extraordinary Committee Meeting via social media platforms to discuss the feasibility of holding this year's event.

"After careful review, and with the heaviest of hearts, it was decided that this year's event will need to be cancelled.

"Our overriding concern has always been the health and wellbeing of our parade participants, performers, traders and public who support us and make Wem Carnival the fantastic event that it is.

"We know that this will be a huge disappointment for the community, and we desperately wanted to be able to put on the event to give the town something to look forward to, but feel our decision is the most socially responsible thing we can do to ensure public safety and wellbeing.

"As soon as we are able to, we will start planning for next year's event which will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021 and hope you will support us in our decision.

"It goes without saying, we wish you the best of health and please stay safe."
