A RHYL paralympic swimmer whose life was saved by the NHS as a boy is putting his best foot forward for the NHS.

Entrepreneur Mark Williams, director and owner of the award-winning Denbigh based company LIMB-art, has created a prosthetic leg cover to promote the Government’s ‘Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives’ message.

The Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games bronze and silver medalist was aged 10 when he was cycling home from school when he was involved in a road traffic accident in Pen-y-Maes, Rhyl. He lost his leg as a result of the accident.

Mr Williams said: “Our NHS cover has been grabbing lots of attention.

“I created the cover for a number of reasons. I know first-hand the absolutely fantastic work all the NHS workers do because they saved my life when I was a boy.

“From the paramedics who came to my accident and whisked me to hospital to the nursing care and fantastic surgeon, they all played a role in coming to my rescue.

“I also wanted to do something special to thank the NHS for all the amazing work they are doing during these difficult coronavirus times.”

More than 500 people become amputees in the UK each month.

LIMB-art designs and manufactures high quality prosthetic leg covers for people with above and below knee prostheses.

The company was born out of an overwhelming desire to help other prosthetic users raise their confidence, be proud of what they have and have fun showing off whilst doing so.

Mr Williams efforts saw him named a Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018 by Easyjet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, as well as a letter from from Kensington Palace offering congratulations from The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William - who was born on the same day Mr Williams lost his leg.

This particular NHS custom cover is made of injection-moulded high grade nylon and costs £395.

Mr Williams added: “Our mission is to help users stand out and stand proud. Our leg covers can be instrumental in raising confidence and self-esteem.

“Prostheses have come on in leaps and bounds functionally, but how they look hasn’t. LIMB-art aims to change this. Our covers are lightweight and easy to fit. They give the wearer a full leg shape and restore balance to their silhouette,

“They are also a great talking point. Our customisation allows wearer’s personalities to shine through in their choice of shapes and colours, be that a Ferrari red finish or a Harley Davidson graphic.”
