The billionaire Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, a former pupil of Ellesmere College and the richest person in the world under the age of 30, has donated an extra £10 million to the UK's coronavirus relief effort.

The Duke attended the college between 2000 and 2009 where he was school prefect and a house captain before going onto study at university in Newcastle.

The majority of the donation will support the NHS, through NHS Charities Together, to provide respite, rehabilitation and mental health assistance to NHS staff and their families.

The Duke, who is one of Prince George's godparents, said the donation is inspired by the dedication and hard work from all NHS staff and emergency keyworkers.

"On behalf of my family and everyone at the Grosvenor Estate, I want to say a huge thank you to all our amazing NHS staff and everyone providing critical frontline services.," he said.

"We are all humbled and incredibly grateful that you are working tirelessly to keep us safe and keep the country functioning.

"NHS staff and key workers don't work in isolation.

"They have children and families whose health and wellbeing will also be highly impacted by this crisis.

"As they keep us safe, I want to help provide as much support to them and their families as we can."

He also donated £2.5 million in March to charities providing essential food distribution to vulnerable families.

Meanwhile, the College has updated the list of groups that have benefitted from DT staff's hard work in creating personal protective equipment (PPE).

Last week, staff at the school began making PPE for Severn Hospice but have now extended that work to making more than 2,000 essential face shields for Shropshire hospital and hospice workers.

They have distributed 100 face shields to Severn hospice, 90 to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, 700 to a number of NHS sites around north Powys, 15 for the Churchmere GP practice in Ellesmere and one shield for Oswestry Police.

They have also distributed shields across the UK including Lincolnshire, and are currently working on 1,000 for Wrexham's Maelor Hospital.
