A GROUP aimed at supporting residents of Whitchurch through the COVID-19 pandemic has officially launched and is now in a position to offer help.

Helping Hands Whitchurch initially got off the ground last month, with a number of residents and businesses offering to help in any way.

The project has now been set in stone, and a helpline has been set up for those that need it.

A poster with contact details has been circulated to various businesses that are still open, so even those who are not internet users can still access the help.

The scheme is partly the brainchild of Steve Chapman, who said he is keen to help those that are not online.

"We're particularly keen to reach those who aren't online," said Steve. "It's really important people know we won't make any unannounced calls or visits to anybody.

"It kicks in once they contact the number or email address where they'll be designated a volunteer to help.

"We've had an incredible response with over 35 folk stepping in to help. This is aside of the other established town groups who are already doing amazing things.

"Helping Hands Whitchurch would not be happening like this without the leadership of the RCC Rural Communities Charity who've kindly stepped in to run the scheme.

"We hope to extend support by working in association with the Whitchurch Chamber of Trade promoting some of the local businesses who are bravely staying open to service the community with essentials as well as keeping our economy ticking over in these incredibly challenging times."
