MALPAS Fabric Arts Group has shared the results of their most recent workshop meeting.

Members recently attended a pre-lockdown workshop with Lynne Edwards MBE, an internationally renowned tutor of patchwork and quilting techniques.

Lynne told the group how she had observed that the tiles in many ancient buildings are reminiscent of patchwork blocks, which are the name given to the shapes which make up a patchwork quilt.

She had taken the essence of these and interpreted them into designs to stitch.

After demonstrating a few handy techniques, Lynne invited each member to choose one of her designs and create a tile of her own.

Group members found it fascinating to see how different colour choices could make the same pattern appear so unique, and everyone enjoyed seeing the results at the end.

This was particularly enjoyed by special guest, Iker the hearing dog, who ensured everyone received a warm welcome.

Group member Fiona Roberts gave a run down of the sorts of activities the group normally do.

"Members of Malpas Fabric Arts Group are a mixture of experienced quilters, beginners and everything between: there is always someone with experience to lend a helping hand," she said.

"Although most enjoy patchwork and quilting, they also like to try out different techniques and work with other textile materials.

"Items made range from quilts, wall-hangings, bags, book covers, Christmas decorations, to trinket boxes.

"Members also make baby quilts for the Project Linus charity, and other initiatives, such as Quilts For Christmas Dinners, an organisation aiming to provide a quilt for a young person about to leave the care system.

"Although meetings are currently suspended, patchwork and quilting is a hobby which can be enjoyed at home while isolating, and some supplies are still available online.

"While sadly the group are very disappointed to cancel their exhibition which was scheduled for later this month, they are all planning to finish projects which require more time to complete."
