Thomas Adams School in Wem has responded to the urgent request to donate personal protective equipment (PPE) to the NHS.

With the shortage of protective equipment for health care professionals dealing with the coronavirus outbreak, schools are being asked to donate science goggles and other apparatus.

So far, the school's science department has donated six boxes of disposable gloves and 12 pairs of science goggles to the Wem and Prees Medical Centre.

The school has also donated more than 60 new pairs of safety glasses and science goggles to the Telford Princess Royal Hospital (PRH).

To support others, the design and technology department has been busy making prototype face shields and testing them this week.

These have now gone in to full production using the skills of teachers and the facilities of the school's workshops and the first batch is heading to the respiratory ward at PRH.

Headteacher, Mark Cooper, said helping key workers was a brilliant use of school equipment.

"This is a brilliant use of staff skills and our school equipment to help key workers who are facing exceptionally challenging situations on a daily basis," he said.

The school will also be supporting local care homes, GP surgeries and hospital wards and will continue to make as many as possible.

Shields are produced using a laser cutter, polypropylene and acetate sheets and the face shield head band can be varied in size to fit all.

At this moment in time, the design and technology department are projecting making 100 shields per day.
