SIGNIFICANT works will be needed to repair a Wrexham road following recent flood issues, it has been confirmed.

The Leader reported in February how floodwater affected many areas across north Wales.

Among the impacts for Bangor-on-Dee was the closure of the Straight Mile (B5426 Johnstown to Bangor on Dee, Plassey Roundabout to Bangor on Dee Bridge) due to the River Dee bursting its banks.

Wrexham Council has now confirmed the road has "some underlying structural problems that will require some significant engineering repairs".

A council spokesman said some temporary emergency repairs have been arranged which will allow the road to be re-opened.

This removes a "significant traffic diversion" and should help the travelling public to move around this part of the county although, the spokesman said.

But the council is asking the public to take note of the current advice about essential travel.

Councillor David A Bithell, lead member for place, environment and transport, said: "Thanks to the staff from the environment and technical department who have secured the re-opening of the Straight Mile following the recent storm damage.

"Opening this road will relieve one of the problems for the local community in this area.

"We have made representation to the Welsh Government for additional funding to arrange for the additional longer term repairs."
