A KINNERLEY man was jailed for two years following a brutal Oswestry street attack that left his victim with a broken leg and cuts.

Ryan Gittings, 30, of Coly Anchor in Kinnerley, drunkenly attacked William Hardcastle with a brick in Church Street, Oswestry, around 12 months ago while he was also seen kicking his body.

He was jailed at Shrewsbury Crown Court this week after he had admitted a charge of causing Mr Hardcastle grievous bodily harm (GBH).

Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said the defendant had been out drinking on March 2 last year when he got into a confrontation and lost his temper outside Boots in Church Street.

One witness saw the defendant pick up a brick and run towards the victim and hit him on the back of the head and land kicks to his body.

Mr Jones said that Mr Hardcastle received 10 stitches, and had two and three-inch lacerations to his head and bruising to his face, including a black eye.

He now has to have steroid injections in his knee and needed physiotherapy.

Mr Jones said that Mr Hardcastle was in a cast for eight weeks and can no longer take part in cricket and rugby with his friends because of his injuries.

He had also lost his job and relationship after the attack.

The court was told Gittings initially ran away from the scene, but returned and told police he acted in self-defence, but had little recollection of what happened.

Rob Edwards, for Gittings, said that when in drink his client was unable to control his temper.

"He is thankful that the injury was not as serious as it could have been," he added. "He is sorry."
