WEM off-road cycling star Isaac Vickery has started off the new season in typical form, winning round one of the Midlands Cross Country Mountain Bike Series in dominating fashion.

The series consists of five races held in Shropshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

The event attracts a large field of racers from the elite men right through to the under-8 children.

After a two month break from racing his bike, Isaac was back racing a bike at the first round of the Midlands Cross Country Mountain Bike held at Dudmaston, Shropshire – hosted by Bridgnorth Cycling Club and Clee Cycles.

A field of 22 U10 children took to a great course which was perfect for Isaac with a two steep hills and two tricky fast downhill single tracks to negotiate as it wound through the woods.

This was Isaac's first race as an U10 and he faced strong competition from riders who had come as far afield as Shibden CC in Yorkshire and many of the riders were a year older than Isaac.

Isaac has used his two months off to try a few other sports that would strengthen him for the upcoming mountain bike season.

He has been climbing and running weekly but whatever the weather, which has mostly been wet, he has been on his mountain bike at least once a week – often at Corbett Woods in Grinshill, training hard for this first race.

Mountain biking is Isaac's favourite cycling discipline and he was in exceptional form on Sunday.

Isaac got an electric start and put in an incredible first lap of 2.34 minutes, which saw him build a lead of 38 seconds on the field.

Three further laps without incident saw Isaac role over the line to take victory, never challenged.

Isaac will be back in action at round two of the Midlands Cross Country Mountain Bike Series on April 26, which will take place at Swynnerton Old Park, Hanchurch Woods, Stoke-on-Trent.
