Ellesmere Primary School was invaded by an army of Highway Rats, a sprinkling of Harry Potters, and groups of Gruffalos and Grinches as pupils got into the spirit of World Book Day.

The excited youngsters got dressed up as their favourite characters during a day of literature-based learning and fun.

A magical morning started with a play - the Wizard of Oz delivered by M&M Productions - followed by a themed lunch of ruby red meatballs and ‘Scarecrow’s own-grown jacket potatoes’.

A story written by every child at the Elson Road school was read out during assembly.

And the book-themed week continued with a visit from Sam Sedgman, author of The Highland Falcon Thief, who spoke to spellbound kids during assembly.

Headteacher Stuart Roberts said: “Everyone worked extremely hard to make it a truly memorable week, so a big thank you to all the staff, parents and teachers who made it possible.

“We have so much fun on these occasions, and it is a great way to encourage children to read, which is vital to their education.”
