STAFF at a Wem opticians were inspired by World Book Day to follow the yellow brick road and raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s Society.

The team at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care, in Wem High Street, took on a new look as fictional favourites from The Wizard of Oz to host a cake sale and to run a book tombola which will continue all week.

Children can also support the cause by entering a colouring competition which runs until April 24 for a recommended £1 donation and the chance to win the Kid Normal book collection.

Branch manager Melanie Mort said dressing up was to raise money for a cause close to their hearts and everyone enjoyed it.

She added: “Our fancy dress was a fun way to celebrate World Book Day and highlight a cause we care about.

"Alzheimer’s affects a growing number of people in our community and there is a real need for continued research and support.”

Scrivens is supporting Alzheimer’s Society for a sixth successive year because there is evidence of a link between uncorrected hearing loss and dementia, including Alzheimer’s.

The family business, which was established in 1938, has 180 stores in England and Wales, and more than 1,100 employees.
