THE Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner, has given her support to a new fund which will help community groups impacted by flooding.

The Shropshire Flood Relief Fund has been set up by Shropshire Rural Communities Charity (RCC) for groups which have been financially affected – both directly by flood damage and indirectly as a result of the disruption caused across the county.

Anna Turner is the Queen’s representative in Shropshire and Patron of Shropshire RCC.

She said: “It is in times of need that Shropshire RCC comes into its own and so I am delighted to hear that it is offering a flood relief fund for community groups, which I wholeheartedly back.

“If we can help some of the vitally important groups and voluntary organisations get back onto their feet, it will ease the hardship and damage that the flooding has caused.”

Community groups, voluntary organisations and charities are eligible to apply for the fund, which will give out grants of up to £1,000.

Julia Baron, chief executive officer of Shropshire RCC, added: “The impact of flooding is far and wide and it can hit small organisations hard, especially those that are already running on extremely tight budgets.

“This fund will be available to help a range of situations, from replacing much-needed equipment to supporting a charity that has seen a spike in their costs because it responded to the crisis by mobilising volunteers to help people in need.”

Shropshire RCC has also set up a fundraising appeal for the fund to ensure as many groups as possible are helped.

Julia added: “Community organisations are the fabric holding people together, especially in times of adversity.

“Every penny donated will go towards helping groups across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin continue to be there and be strong for their communities long after the waters recede.”
