West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division
Wem Town FC 0
Wolverhampton Casuals 0
WEM Town FC put aside their previous league woes to put in an inspired performance on Saturday against a Wolverhampton Casuals team seeking promotion.
The home side have had a tough time of it this season, currently sitting third from bottom of the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division having lost four of their last five fixtures.
Wolverhampton Casuals on the other hand have been in excellent form, and came into the game with four wins on the bounce.
But perhaps with a 12th man in the form of Storm Ciara, Wem were able to hold the visitors to a 0-0 draw.
Defensively Wem were solid, but the visitors do not have the sharpest goalscoring record in the division, having scored 41 in 18 games, a tally that rivals more mid-table clubs.
But Wolverhampton’s greatest strength this season has been their defence, having let in just five goals all season.
Unfortunately, this defensive brick wall proved to be too much for Wem’s forwards, with the game finishing without a goal at either end.
For Wem the result will be a vital one, as they aim to keep their heads above water.
Cradley Town and Dudley Sports occupy the bottom two positions of the table, both with a similar league record to Wem.
But both teams have several games in hand, so Wem will need a few more good results to climb towards safety.
Wem’s next fixture is away from home to Shifnal Town, this Saturday at the Acoustafoam Stadium in Coppice Green Lane, Shifnal.
Kick-off at 3pm.
