A GROUP dedicated to the preservation of herons on Ellesmere's Mere is celebrating reaching 30 by calling for more members for its 'Launch Day' next week.

Ellesmere Heronwatch volunteers have been watching the herons at Ellesmere for 30 years and life is certainly beginning on a small island in the Mere.

Edward Bevan, chair of Heronwatch, says the cameras are all set to view the local ‘celebrities in the trees’ on Moscow Island, on the Mere, and right on cue the herons are gathering again and are getting ready to give a good show.

He said: "We saw a couple of early arrivals a few weeks ago and are looking forward to seeing the birds breeding and raising their families again.

"And we certainly have a ring-side seat at the Boathouse with fabulous views of the nests.

“There’ll be something for everyone on the 'Launch Day', as our volunteers will be there to show the best views on the screens and through the telescopes as well as providing children’s activities.

“And if anyone would like to become involved, whether you’re 30, or 20 or 40 or even past counting, we’d be delighted to welcome new Heronwatch volunteers to join the team.

"No experience is necessary as full training will be given. Just turn up on the day and ask.

"And, of course, the launch is only the beginning, as the Heronwatch season continues every day 10.30am to 3.30pm, until about the end of May."

Anyone wishing to join the group and join in on the action, head to the Boathouse on Saturday, February 15 from 10.30am for the launch of this year’s Heronwatch season.

There will be a chance to follow family life in a 'heronry' near you – who doesn’t love a bit of romance and a new baby – they will be coming to the screens, not in your living room but in the comfort of the Boathouse on the A495 in Ellesmere (SY12 0PA).

The Boathouse will also be offering refreshments to be bought.
