MALPAS is gearing up to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe with a celebratory weekend.

The Malpas VE75 Weekend joins national recognition of the the end of the war in Europe from May 8 to May 10.

Activities and events over the three-days aim to bring the era back to life and share a real experience of the early 1940s. The Malpas VE75 Committee aims to replicate the euphoria experienced as troops returned home in 1945.

Second World War military, commercial and agricultural vehicles alongside evacuees, the women's land army, soldiers and nurses will join Friday's parade through Malpas High Street up to the recreation ground.

A gunshot will be fired followed by a silent tribute to the fallen and a brass band will also play as youngsters take part in a 1940s treasure hunt and enjoy family street party style celebrations.

In the evening, St Oswald's church bells will ring out for peace and a spectacular outdoor musical proms style concert will be performed with a firework finale.

As well as the cream tea dance on Saturday, there will be two drama performances of War End sketches in the Jubilee Hall.

On Sunday, a VE75 Commemoration Service will be held in St Oswald's Church.

Throughout the weekend there will be a chance to find out more about local lifestyle during the Second World War in the interactive exhibition of military and domestic artefacts.

Tickets for the VE celebrations can be bought from local shops.
