A STRICTLY Come Dancing Star has visited Malpas to help launch preparations for this year's VE75 Weekend.

Chloe Hewitt, who is one of the professional dancers on the BBC show, was at Malpas Alport Primary School to give dancing taster sessions to Years 5 and 6.

The dancer was teaching youngsters about Second World War era dances, such as the jive and the lindy-hop, while practising steps to music.

Budding performers at the school can sign up to join after-school dance classes this summer and a small group will take part in a 'Strictly 45' showcase for the Malpas VE Commemoration Weekend, which will take place between May 8 and May 10.

Chloe will lead the showcase display held during the afternoon cream tea dance on Saturday, May 9 when tea and scones will be served. Liz Jones and the OPAL singers will reminisce with songs from the wartime era.

"Dancing boosted morale during the Second World War," said Chloe. "Keeping active is still so important and we're going to have fun sharing dance techniques leading up to Malpas VE75 Weekend."

As well as encouraging dancing preparations, Malpas VE75 committee are also looking for memories and memorabilia from the Second World War for their Exhibition of Military and Domestic Artefacts.

Anyone with suitable local artefacts are invited to attend a Second World War Roadshow, to be held in Malpas High Street Church on Saturday, January 25 between 9 am and 12 noon.
