North Shropshire MP, Owen Paterson, has delivered his Christmas message as below:

"At long last, after a decisive election result and the passing at second reading of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, the uncertainty and malaise of the last three and a half years has lifted. Brexit is going to happen on January 31, 2020. We need not argue about it over our Christmas tables and can instead look forward to the wonderful opportunities that await in the New Year.

"In particular, we can look forward to striking bold new Free Trade Agreements both with the EU and with allies across the globe. The high protectionist barriers of the European Union’s Customs Union currently allow internal producers to bump up their prices to the detriment of consumers. But eliminating tariffs can lower these consumer costs. It would also force European sellers to reduce their prices to compete with global competitors, providing cheaper raw materials for all consumers.

"Alongside these plans, we can do more to support our producers at home. We can use the money we currently spend on the Common Agricultural Policy for a generous scheme to reward farmers for the environmental and public good that they do. We can direct public procurement towards them, and we can encourage import substitution to make the UK more self-sufficient in our food.

"Above all, we can provide an enormous boost to rural productivity by freeing farmers from the extreme technological risk aversion which the EU indulges in under the banner of the Precautionary Principle. Instead, we can allow farmers to embrace the latest technology, to the benefit of yields, costs, and – importantly – the environment.

"Christmas is a perfect opportunity to visit local shops, supporting local farmers and businesses by buying their produce. Buying local is immensely important, and I very much hope that you will enjoy some of the fine goods which Shropshire businesses produce this year.

"As for next year, there is a great deal about which to be excited. Once we get Brexit done, Parliament can move on to focus on other pressing domestic priorities. We can invest in transport and other infrastructure projects to promote growth. We can enhance public services, including healthcare. "We can improve our digital and communications links, ensuring that those in areas like ours can harness the advantages of technology just as much as those in towns and cities.

"There will be challenges ahead. But with the old, dysfunctional Parliament replaced with a new, improved one, I feel sure that we can meet them and enjoy a freer and more prosperous future.

"I wish all my constituents a very Happy Christmas and a successful New Year."
