In THE build-up to Christmas, visitors to Ellesmere's Boathouse were treated to the opportunity of making wreaths that encompass Shropshire's Christmas traditions.

The event, held at the popular venue on the Mere, was organised by Shropshire Wildlife Trust, who are often on hand to get people into the great beyond.

Dr Cath Price, who is north Shropshire engagement officer at the Trust, was there with volunteer Pete Shaw, to put together the wreaths for visitors of all ages.

And she felt the day was brilliantly supported.

"It's been a brilliant day and we've had lots of people in to make some wreaths and some candle wreaths too," she said.

"They were very popular.

"It's events like this that are vital for us to get out what we do all over the county.

"We had lots of people coming over and making their own wreaths which was really popular and that's great for us too.

"Some people just wanted to buy ones that we had made already just in time for Christmas.

"We were able to show people and the role of holly in Shropshire's Christmas history and how we managed to use the greenery in the natural way.

"We hope that people will get in touch about more events."

Visitors learned more about holly and how in Shropshire a holly decoration should be kept up on 12th Night and allowed to dry to make a fire for Shrove Tuesday.
