A SCHOOL near Malpas has been getting festive by hosting a Christmas grotto.

Members of Shocklach Oviatt CofE Primary School's Grotto Committee have been hard at work transforming the school gazebo into the magical grotto – even sourcing a vintage sleigh, skis, a traditional type writer, classic fireplace and Father Christmas' chair.

Ian Bartholomew, school governor and Coronation Street star, played the part of the man in the red suit, and the children were delighted to see his helper, Fizz the pony.

Julie Adams, a photographer and who is the parent of a child who once attended the school, captured the children meeting Father Christmas and their expressions were priceless.

Finola Jackson, teacher at the school, said the Shocklach pupils and members of Treetops Toddlers had been given an unforgettable festive experience.

"The dedication gone into this grotto reflects how passionate Shocklach parents are in helping to make this school such a unique haven in which the children can grow and learn," said Ms Jackson.

"To bring our school and wider community together, Shocklach is hosting a special evening with Christmas carols around the grotto, complete with traditional lanterns made by the children.

"Shocklach is thrilled that Chris Gilbert, Art and Soul Man, will lead on the guitar and share his musical expertise."
