GREG Davies returned to his home town last Friday to switch on Wem’s Christmas lights.

The comedian, star of the Inbetweeners, Taskmaster and Man Down, did the honours in front of a large crowd assembled at St Peter and St Paul Church, before giving a rousing speech.

Greg joked with the crowd about his lack of microphone, meaning he had to “go old school town crier”, before saying that he didn’t just come to Wem every Christmas because his mum lived there.

“In my 51 years on this planet, I have only missed three Christmases in Wem,” said Greg.

“Some would say this is because my mum lives here, and I am obliged to come back. There is some truth in that.

“But like all of you here, I genuinely have a great deal of affection for this little town and I genuinely think that despite what people in Whitchurch say, ‘Wemians’ are nice, kind people.”

Also on the evening there was the Christmas fair, as well as the Christmas parade and the crowning of the new Snow Queen, Megan Williams.

Wem Mayor Phil Glover then joined Megan in judging the town’s shop fronts.
