IT WAS a great weekend for Whitchurch Rugby Club's youth sides as they picked up the silverware in the inaugural Shropshire County Tournament.

Both Whitchurch under-15s and under-13s became county champions on Sunday as they defeated all before them.

Whitchurch hosted the U15 competition, while the U13s were at Oswestry and U14s at Shrewsbury.

It was a great afternoon of rugby, with the six county teams of Whitchurch, Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Newport and Telford all taking part.

The standard of rugby was extremely high from all teams and the games were played in the true spirit of rugby enhancing the core values.

Pick of the bunch was Whitchurch U13s, who played some exciting rugby, winning all their five games at Oswestry to became the U13 county champions.

Whitchurch U14s were less fortunate, but showed great tenacity in some very challenging conditions and battled well winning one, losing one and drawing two.

And finally the U15s started the afternoon by beating Oswestry then Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury, Newport and finally drawing with Telford.

The whole team were exceptional with the forwards dominating all the scrums and taking the game to the opposition.

The highlight, in a very tight game against a strong Newport team, was Whitchurch having a lineout on the 22 with 30 secs to go.

It was won and the Whitchurch team set up a perfect maul and drove over for the winning try.

Mark Hares, the Mini and Junior chairman, said he was "delighted" with the results and all the players had done themselves and their coaches proud in the way they played and represented the club.
