Whitchurch WI held their AGM on November 11, and the meeting was extremely well attended with just three members sending their apologies.

The business was swiftly dealt with, and members re-elected the officers and the previous committee plus two additional members.

Cathy Preston had been invited to talk about her love of willow and the items that could be made using the differing types.

The group learnt how from her working with the Antler Luggage Company who made high end wicker picnic sets, to the current day where she now grows and harvests her own willow to produce many different items for sale.

She then demonstrated how to make a willow tea candle holder that everyone attempted with the materials she supplied.

Looking at the final results, some were excellent – others not so good, but it was really a great, fun evening.

The competition of a handmade poppy was won by Christine Bolton, second was Jackie Blakely, and third was Sue Hollins.

The next meeting will be held at the Civic Centre on December 9, where it will be party time with lots of food, fun and games.

Potential new members are always welcome.

Meanwhile members of Whitchurch WI have also been knitting up a storm for the Special Care Baby Unit of Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals.

Following the success of our yarn bombing in the town centre Bull Ring earlier this year, Whitchurch WI Craft Club, were approached to see if we could provide shawls for patients in Whitchurch Hospital.

The girls rallied round, and with the help from the Knit and Natter Group, we were able to knit and crochet a good number, one of which was used immediately upon delivery.

Our latest venture, tiny quilts, are shortly to be given to the Special Care Baby Unit of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust. Twenty plus so far produced.
