A marina could be given a fresh lease of life after plans for holiday lodges and new accommodation were submitted to Shropshire Council.

Whixall Marina Property Ltd has applied to build six lodges and convert existing buildings at the former Forrester’s Yard site into accommodation in a bid to boost tourism.

The plans for the marina, near Whitchurch, were lodged with the council this week.

In the planning statement, agents Peter Richards & Co, say the work should bring visitors to the region.

It said: “This is to accompany a full application for the change of use of agricultural land into a tourism use to allow the siting of up to six holiday lodges and the conversion of traditional outbuildings formerly associated with Forresters Yard, Dobsons Bridge, Whixall, into holiday accommodation.

“It is proposed to site up to six luxurious holiday lodges which will contain kitchenettes, toilet facilities, living space and individual amenity space.

“To compliment the holiday lodges, a modest range of traditional buildings are also proposed to be converted into holiday accommodation.

“The site is located adjacent Dobson’s Bridge which forms part of Whixall and is located close to the popular visitor attractions of the Whixall Marina, Whixall Meres and Mosses, Colemere and Bettisfield.”

It added: “The proposed holiday accommodation is looking to complement and enhance the tourist/visitor facilities of the adjacent Whixall Marina, which has recently undergone refurbishments and now boasts a successful café which is popular with local visitors and boats coming to the site.

“The site is a walkable distance from the popular visitor attraction of Whixall Moss.

“There are also a number of walks along various sections of the Llangollen Canal which runs through this area.

“It is acknowledged that the applicant has already gained permission for a boat repair

workshop, however, given the success of the café and permitted glamping units the applicant is looking to add to the range of tourist holiday accommodation.”

In conclusion, the application adds: “The proposed development seeks to improve and enhance the tourism accommodation offered in North Shropshire.

“The proposal will complement a successful redevelopment of the adjacent Whixall Marina.

“It is evident that the applicant has rejuvenated a successful business at the Marina which is well used by locals and visitors alike, subsequently it is considered that this proposal will continue to aid and develop the applicants business in the future.”
