WEM Town Council have confirmed that work is going ahead to purchase one of the town's iconic buildings.

The White Horse Hotel in High Street is a Grade II listed building, but has sat empty for more than a decade and those who have entered the building in recent months say it is a poor state.

Its derelict nature has also alarmed members of Shropshire Council, who say they have already had to make emergency repairs to the building.

A letter sent to the owner of a neighbouring property said that if repairs did not take place to the building, then the council has the ability to compulsory purchase the pub.

The issue was discussed by councillors at the full council meeting held on Thursday, October 31, with Councillor Chris Mellings saying that work was being put towards an improvement notice on the White Horse, including a compulsory purchase notice.

He added this would also involve carrying out repairs and doing the relevant things to get the building back into use.
