CHILDREN from Clutton CofE Primary School have been learning about different cultures and religions by celebrating Diwali.

Pupils at the school enjoyed an afternoon of Diwali celebrations recently in readiness for the five day Hindu festival of lights.

During the Diwali activities at Clutton, children in all year groups were taught the meaning of the Diwali festival, which celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, through the story of Prince Rama and Princess Sita.

Reception, year 1 and year 2 made Diwali cards and then chose to either retell the story by making masks, colouring in characters from the story or making giant rangoli patterns.

Meanwhile year 3 and year 4 showed the story through a dance they created themselves, while year 5 and year 6 made traditional rangoli patterns from rice in groups.

Year 3 and 4 teacher at Clutton Primary School, Linzi Georgeson, said: “As a Church of England school, religious education is an extremely valued part of the curriculum, with pupils learning about different faiths including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism.

"The Diwali celebrations were an opportunity to involve every child in a collective learning experience to enhance their understanding of this important religious festival.”
