Members of Oswestry & Borders Flower Club have been celebrating their Blue Sapphire anniversary, with a meal and cake at the Sweeney Hotel.

Professor David Osselton gave a power point presentation on ''P' is for Plant Poison'.

The late Iona Trevor-Jones founded the club some 65 years ago with meetings initially held in Bellan House. Five years later, the club became affiliated to NAFAS (the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies).

In the early years, Constance Spry was a guest at the club, and members continue to be involved with flower festivals, shows, competitions and charitable events.

Details of the club and its Blue Sapphire anniversary are now displayed in Oswestry Library.

The Christmas Open Meeting will be on Tuesday, November 19 at 7.30pm in the concert hall at The Marches School in Oswestry when NAFAS national demonstrator and RHS judge, Ian Lloyd, from Wilmslow, will be giving the club a Cheshire Christmas.

Tickets are £10 for visitors to include refreshments, from any committee members or by telephoning 01691 780506.

And through the club's association with NAFAS, three members, Maggie Evans, Kath Thomas and Michelle Davies have recently arranged flowers at Westminster Abbey.

The Dean, the Very Rev Dr John Hall complimented them on their designs as did visitors passing by. Maggie, Kath and Michelle recently spoke of this one-off occasion as a pleasure and honour to work in such an iconic building.

The club meet on the third Tuesday of each month, except August and December at 7.30pm at Morda and Sweeney Village Hall, for demonstrations, workshops and talks.
