COMMUNITY groups around Whitchurch have benefitted from a charity football match.

The Ethelston Cup is an invitational event held every year between Whitchurch Alport and a number of other local football teams.

This year the Ethelston Cup was won by the home side after they beat FC Oswestry Town 1-0 in the final.

The on-pitch action and the chance to beat a neighbouring town for some coveted silverware is always a big draw for the fans.

Gate receipts from those fans are collected over the course of the competition and at the end the money is donated to several charities and other worthy causes.

On Saturday, September 28, members of the Ethelston Cup Committee presented cheques to several organisations including the army cadets, the scouts and guides, Older People Avoiding Isolation and the Bradbury Centre at the White Bear in High Street.

The Whitchurch Community Choir also benefitted from the funding raised by the competition.
