IT WAS last gasp heartache for Wem's Isaac Vickery after he was beaten on the line at the most recent round of the West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League.
Last Sunday saw Isaac competing in the fourth round of the U10 league in driving rain at the Heart of England Conference Centre in Coventry.
The conditions were some of the hardest that the competitors will have likely encountered with deep mud sapping their energy from the off.
Isaac representing the Mid Shropshire Wheelers and Jet du Toit, riding for Newark Castle CC quickly established a lead and eased away from their fellow competitors.
After going head to head for five gruelling laps, the two boys finished more than a minute in front of the chasing pack.
Just as he had in the previous round, Isaac was leading out of the last corner, but on this occasion the tables were turned.
In a sprint finish to the line, du Toit came from behind to snatch the win on the line by a quarter of a wheel length.
With both boys given the identical finishing time it could not have been closer.
Round five of the West Midlands Cyclo-cross League will take place on the October 20, hosted by Newport Town CC at Newport Rugby Club.
