CHILDREN from Whitchurch and Wem have been learning crucial messages on how to stay safe.

Taking place in the first week of October every year, Safety Scene uses a theatrical village to act out safety messages to school children aged 10 from the north Shropshire area.

This year's event was able to go ahead thanks to £1,000 of funding from Whitchurch Town Council.

Councillor Peggy Mullock was one of those who helped secure the funding and was once again in attendance on the opening day.

It has been operating for 24 years first at Ternhill then at RAF Shawbury," said Peggy. "Rotary has been involved, with the bonfire scene first, now with many more.

"Fire and Rescue take part, canal safety, health nurses, first responders to name a few. Local Community Police are also there.

"Over the years some of the scenes have changed to reflect the new dangers that children may face, especially social media.

"Children in year six from all over north Shropshire get the chance to attend. Glyn Teggin, who was a police officer, is the original organiser and is still in charge."
