TRIBUTES have been paid after the sudden death of a popular Chirk Town football player earlier this week.

Jason Williams, 28, was a familiar face around the town, having worked at the fruit and vegetable shop for many years.

His death prompted a huge response on social media, with people from Chirk and neighbouring villages and towns paying tribute.

Chirk Town FC posted on Facebook: “With little over six months since the club was born, never did we think we would have to post something like this.

“As most are aware, we lost our number five Jason Williams yesterday morning.

“Jason was a fantastic player, but much more importantly, a fantastic friend to us all, and the changing rooms won’t be the same again.”

As a mark of respect, the football club will be retiring his number five shirt for the remainder of the season, and have postponed their game with Bradley Park which was scheduled for Saturday.

A fundraising page has been set up online by the football club.
