THE Charity Commission has revealed it would be requesting more information from charities that allowed a convicted paedophile to serve as a trustee.

Yesterday we revealed Edward Roberts, who is understood to still be living in Grafton Flyford near Worcester, has been serving on the board of the charities Grafton Flyford Relief in Need, the Sir John Grafton and the Grafton and Stonehall Education Foundation.

Roberts, who was jailed for two years for child abuse aged 72 in 2012, was removed from the list of trustees for each charity on the commission’s website in recent days.

A spokesman for the commission said: “Serious safeguarding concerns have been raised with us relating to an individual who served as a trustee for three charities.

"This situation is completely at odds with what the public would expect from a charity and we have contacted the charity for further information, in order to understand how the individual was allowed to remain in post at these charities.

“Trustees should always take steps to ensure anyone who comes into contact with their charity is protected from harm - this includes carrying out appropriate checks on who they appoint as trustees and keeping these up-to-date, especially when an organisation works with children and young people.”
