A BENCH has been unveiled to commemorate a key member of the Malpas community.

On Thursday, September 12, family, friends and committee members belonging to Hampton Heath Thursday Club were present to unveil a bench in honour of Winifred Parker.

Situated in Malpas Cemetery, the bench is a tribute to Winifred, who was the founder and organising secretary of the club for 43 years.

Meetings were held fortnightly throughout the winter months in the Jubilee Hall in Malpas and the club organised coach trips in the summer time.

These holidays were also organised by Winifred, and saw members travel around the UK.

In 2010, Winifred was invited to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in appreciation of her work in the community.

Club member Joyce Woodworth was one of those present during the bench unveiling.

"When Mrs Parker passed away suddenly in 2012, this was a sad loss to everyone," said Joyce.

"The club continued to run for a short time but the decision has now been taken to disband and distribute leftover funds to chosen charities."
