A WEM-based band has launched an appeal for new members following a successful appearance at Wem Carnival.

Wem Jubilee Band once again led this year's carnival parade, a tradition that has been upheld since the band reformed in 1977.

After another popular appearance, band secretary Ruth Wilson says the band is going from strength to strength, and is encouraging new members to join.

“The band, as always, were delighted to lead the afternoon parade of the annual, almost iconic, Wem Carnival," said Ruth.

"Within the marching band were a combination of the very experienced to some marching and playing in their first Carnival having learned to play within the band’s very own training band.

"Our less experienced members on the march on Saturday thoroughly enjoyed the experience of marching as part of the senior band.

"The crowds lining the streets certainly enjoyed the band’s musical renditions of 'Is This The Way to Amarillo', 'The Happy Wanderer', '500 Miles' and 'Bring Me Sunshine'."

Ruth says anyone is welcome to join the band, with a wide range of ages taking part.

"The organisation boasts a wide range of ages and backgrounds, the oldest member having turned 80 in July, our youngest being just 10," added Ruth.

"The members on parade on Saturday are testament to the fact that the band is successfully growing its own talent for the band of the future."
