RESIDENTS in Wem were treated to a carnival atmosphere last Saturday as the iconic event returned to the town.

The carnival, which has been running for more than 100 years, featured two parades through the town, as well as a host of activities on the Gala Field.

Travelling on a circular route through the town, the parade featured dozes of floats as well as various accompanying groups of musicians, dancers and other associated acts.

There was also the added competitive element, with prizes for the different categories of float and fancy dress taking part in the parade.

Everything from Scooby Doo, to Doctor Who featured in the parade, meanwhile several businesses got involved, with prizes on offer for the best decorated pubs and shops.

Meanwhile on the Gala Field carnivalgoers had plenty to enjoy, including a science fair, cannon firing and live rock music.

On top of that there were also the traditional fairground rides, as well as various food and goods stalls.

Following the event the organisers praised the "amazing support" of those who attended.
