FREE driver awareness courses are being offered to drivers in Shropshire as part of a campaign to make roads safer.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion is offering the free courses, with the view that 'too many people' are dying or being seriously injured on the roads of West Mercia.

The training, held in partnership with national driver-education providers TTC, will test drivers on their Highway Code knowledge – including speeds, signs and hazard perception.

Participants will also gain an insight from a roads policing officer on collision statistics, the affects poor driving can have on lives and how technology, such as dash cameras, can help – a discount will also be available to anyone looking to buy one.

The sessions will kick off in November in Worcestershire, with more following every two months in towns and villages within Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin – details of which will be available on the PCC’s website.

PCC John Campion said: “We’ve made a good start working with local councils to improve the roads and introduced increased enforcement through the police, so education is the natural next step.

"Bad habits and bad road behaviour, once formed, can be hard to shift which is why we need to be doing all we can to make our roads safer.

“I hope drivers will benefit from these sessions and the opportunity to brush up on their knowledge.”
