A CONCERT held by the Smiths in Malpas has raised a large sum for the church.

Not to be confused with the Morrissey fronted Manchester rock band, the Smiths are two families sharing a common surname.

The two families joined together at St Oswald’s, Church in Malpas to give a spectacular musical recital – singing for seating raising more than £750.

'The Smiths in Concert' featured St Oswald’s director of music, Stewart Smith, his wife Joanne and son Oliver with choir members John, Liane and their son William raising funds to provide new pew cushions.

The concert followed a coffee morning of delicious cakes and treats provided by St Oswald’s entertainments committee.

The concert by the Smiths, sharing the same surname and exceptional musical talent, was an overwhelming success.

More than 15 individual performances of well known songs and melodies were sung and played solo and in duet to a delighted audience, including Stewart’s 'Humoresque' organ solos.

The group were applauded as they joined harmonies to end the concert with amusing musical ballads.
