RE-ENACTORS descended on Chirk Castle at the weekend to recreate one of Wales' most iconic battles.

Members of Cwmwyd Ial were at the castle to take part in a display of the Battle of Crogen, which in 1165 saw the local Welsh armies fight off an attempted invasion from the English army of Henry II.

Despite being outnumbered, the Welsh army were able to force Henry's army to retreat from Wales altogether.

Visitors to the castle were able to see around 80 re-enactors go toe-to-toe in combat in front of the castle, as well having the opportunity to see how people lived 900 years ago.
