RESCUED dogs from far and wide were the stars of the show at Hector's Annual Fun Dog Show at Cremorne Gardens in Ellesmere on Sunday.

The fun day fundraiser attracted pooches of all shapes and sizes, and their owners, but it was the rescued greyhounds, lurchers and other sighthounds that took centre stage in the 'best of' classes.

Hector's Greyhound Rescue trustee Sian Griffiths said: "A lot of these dogs are abandoned when they stop racing which is when we step in, or we are contacted now by the trainers first.

"When people take them on w do home checks and they sign up to let us know if they can't keep them anymore; that's the safety umbrella we have got in place."

Sian and her colleagues raised several thousand pounds to bring back 13 abandoned dogs from southern Spain earlier this year, including Berto the galgo.
