PUPILS at Lower Heath CofE Primary School enjoyed a visit from one of Britain's star athletes.

On Tuesday, pupils welcomed Team Great Britain and Commonwealth triple jump silver medallist Laura Samuel to the school on behalf of the Sports for Champions scheme.

Laura put the youngsters through their paces with some energetic circuit training on the field before an assembly where she talked about the triple jump and then she officially opened new sports facilities at the school.

Headteacher Mrs Deborah Sadler was delighted to welcome Laura and thanked her for visiting and encouraging pupils to get involved with sports.

She said: "We were so pleased to welcome Laura Samuel to Lower Heath CE Primary School to officially open our new sports facilities.

"The pupils have been really excited leading up to Laura’s visit and have had a fantastic time today.

"Laura’s story is truly inspiring and we hope that her visit really encourages and motivates our pupils to get involved with a variety of sports and activities.

"We would like to thank Laura for visiting and wish her success in her future competitions."

As part of the Sports For Champions scheme the Lower Heath pupils have been working hard completing sponsorship forms.

Siblings Olly and Lily Sewry managed to raise a fantastic £72 between them for the athletes visit, which was the largest total managed from one family.

The school in total raised £465 and the pupils' efforts were rewarded with certificates presented from Laura.
