WHITCHURCH his been struck by a band of 'responsible guerillas' who have taken it upon themselves to spruce up the town.

The group have taken to the streets armed with paintbrushes, to repaint areas of Whitchurch requiring some much needed attention.

The plan is the brainchild of Harvey Vasey, a town councillor but acting independently of the council, who decided to act after hearing from residents about various things around the town that needed fixing up.

"It’s quite a simple thing really. The high street and some of the public areas seemed to be getting a bit dog-eared in places," said Harvey. "So talking to friends, I thought it could be quite quick and easy to sort some of these things out if we did them ourselves.

"The town is full of 'can do' people and we know the area better than anyone else, it’s our town.

"So I spoke to the staff at the Civic Centre and they got the relevant permissions from Shropshire Council and others and I put a little message on Facebook to see if anyone wanted to join us for a couple of hours. Bite size projects, doing a little, often - and having fun doing it.

"The response was absolutely brilliant. Lots of great people turned up and it has brightened the place up no end.

"But more than that, there have been so many new friendships made in those few days - and so many additional people have been wanting to get involved and get stuck in. It’s been really amazing.

"We’re looking at a couple of other little projects around town to work on in a few weeks time. If anyone wants to join in they will be welcomed with open arms.

"We’ve all made loads of new friends and everyone has had a big smile on their face.

"It would be great to say thank you again to everyone who helped on the days we’ve been out. Fantastic people!

"The town clerk’s team have also been brilliant, helping with things like insurances and materials and so have businesses like Benjamin’s cafe, who came over with refreshments when it was hot.

"The whole thing has been hugely positive and I can’t thank people enough."
