MORE THAN 100 teams took to Alderford Lake to contest the eighth running of the Whitchurch Whippets relay.

One hundred and twenty teams entered the sell-out AGRO Merchants Group Relay which took place on the evening of Thursday, July 11.

The format of the race is groups of three runners, with each runner covering a two mile circuit of Alderford Lake, bringing together runners of all abilities.

The annual relay has taken on a new name this year following sponsorship from AGRO Merchants Group, the new owners of Grocontinental.

AGRO Merchants’ sponsorship cheque was presented at the relay to John Dillon, chairman of Whitchurch Whippets by Carlos Rodriguez, the company’s chief executive officer.

Speaking at the event, Andy Henderson, managing director of AGRO Merchants’ site in Whitchurch, said: “It was great to be able to experience the event for the first time, both as a sponsor and a runner.

"The inclusive nature of the relay means it generates a great atmosphere where there is plenty of support and encouragement for everyone taking part. The venue also provides the perfect stage for the event.

“As a company, we had ten teams taking part this year which is fantastic. As a result of participating in previous relays, a number of our runners have taken up running as a hobby which lead to some impressive team performances.

“We are very pleased to be able to support such a successful and enjoyable event.”
