A GROUP of volunteers have been cleaning up the streets of Wem by taking part in a litter pick.

The pick, organised by community group the Wembles, saw the volunteers travel from Jubilee Square, around the town before meeting back at the square.

The group collected a number of bags of rubbish, as well as hundreds of cigarette butts from the pavements.

Group leader, Kate Johnston, said: "This is the second Wembles pick, but we're hoping to do them quarterly.

"We're getting a lot of young people involved and families and by doing it quarterly we're hoping for a regular group of people.

"Trying to encourage people to recycle more, we want to show people in Wem that it's not acceptable to litter.

"The next pick will take place in October during half term. The hope is eventually that we can turn it into an environmental project."
