Wem Civic Society next meeting will be all about the discovery of Roman remains.

Roger White will be telling members about the recent archaeological research at Roman Wroxeter in the society’s next meeting on Tuesday, May 21 at Wem Senior Club.

Dr White is an archaeologist researching the late Roman to early medieval period in the UK and a leading archaeologist on Roman Wroxeter. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Admittance fee for non-members is £2. Tea & Coffee will be provided.

Meanwhile, two trips are arranged for June as members will be heading for Battlefield on Tuesday, June 18. There will be a lunch at Sparrow’s Café (Battlefield) will be followed by a visit to Battlefield Church where Canon Revd William Price will lead a tour of the church.

Then there is a visit to Crewe Junction and Shrewsbury Signal Boxes will take place on Saturday June 8. The list is full for this particular outing but a second trip will be arranged later this year if sufficient people join the reserve list.

Wem Civic Society is supporting the HERITAGE-Wem Group in its planning for a Wem Open Weekend on the September 14-15.

This weekend will be part of this year’s English Heritage festival, which has events taking place nationwide.

Wem’s weekend will include tours showing the town’s historic buildings. A ghost building will form part of the tour.
