COUNCILLORS, residents and youth club members have banded together to clear the streets of litter in Wem.

More than 50 Wem residents got together on Saturday morning to tidy up the town, clearing litter up from around the Co-operative store and Jubilee Square.

Members of Wem Youth Club and Wem Beavers came along to help out.

Councillor George Nash was among those tidying the area, and hopes people can be more considerate for the environment and refrain from littering in the future.

He said: “What we’re trying to do in general is clean up Wem.

“There is still a small number of people who seem to want to discard their litter wherever they want to without any concern for the environment.

“It’s a beautiful town, why spoil it with litter?

“We’re finding all sorts of things including several McDonald’s packaging – we’re not sure why because we don’t even have a McDonald’s in Wem!”

Cllr Nash added that he was pleased to see so many people turn up to help out on the day.

“We’ve got about 60 people taking part, both young and old,” he said.

“It’s really nice to see they’re committed to keeping the town tidy and that they value the presentation of their town.”

Residents who were helping out said they hope the clean up will eventually become a quarterly event.
