Flicks in the Sticks

Flicks in the Sticks joins forces with the Whitchurch Walking Festival on Friday, May 10 with a showing of ‘Edie’ (12a) on the big screen at the Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch Leisure Centre, at 7.30pm.

Sheila Hancock stars as Edie who embarks on an adventure after her husband dies. Instead of the care home her daughter has in mind for her, she climbs Scotland’s imposing Mount Suilven.

Walking festival

THE Whitchurch Walkers are gearing up to their latest annual Whitchurch Walking Festival, which is between May 10-12.

They will be providing three days of walking opportunities and activities that will provide you with the opportunity to explore Whitchurch and the surrounding countryside. There will be eight walks on Friday, some involving a boat trip on the canal, seven on Saturday and eight on Sunday.

Also there will be a variety of interest walks, ranging from poetry, iron founders, photography and nature walks. Evening entertainment will include a film and a folk session on Friday evening as well as a ceilidh for everybody to have an enjoyable evening on Saturday

IT Workshop

The Beechtree Centre, in Claypit Street, holds an IT workshop every Wednesday afternoon from 1-3pm.

Beginners are welcome to any session while it costs £5 per session or £20 for five sessions if booked in advance.

Co-ordinator Gilda Nicholson said: “We are particularly keen to work with complete beginners, who may have never used a computer before.

“There is no upper age limit

“We have a variety of laptops and tablets that you can use at our lovely community centre.

“Find us on the Whitchurch Community Hospital Site.

“If you have your own computer bring it along and we will show you how to use it. We can also assist with mobile phone instruction, actually anything IT!”

Wem

Town meeting

Wem Town Council will be holding its annual town meeting on Thursday from 7pm.

It will be held in the Roden Suite at Edinburgh House from 7pm and has four items on the agenda.

There will be a presentation from Janice Horton who is service manager at The Children’s Society and she will talk about the work of BEAM Shropshire Shropshire project.

BEAM works in communities by running drop-in sessions which provide advice, signposting and support relating to mental and emotional wellbeing to young people under 25.

There will also be presentations from youth groups including Wem ADOS, Wem Scouts, Wem Youth Club and Wem Amy Cadets.

They will also approve minutes of the 2018 Annual Parish meeting and will allow time for other parish matters to be raised.

Rock’n’roll dreams

On SATURDAY, May 11 and Saturday, June 1, people who are interested in music can fulfill their dreams by heading to Wem Town Hall.

Are you a bit of a bathtub singer? Were you in a band when you were younger? Always wanted to have a go but never dared?

Explore and develop your skills within rock, pop, folk and experimental music-making! Led by experienced professional musicians.

The session is aimed at people who are aged 55 plus and if you want to book this free session, book via Wem Town Hall on 01939 238 279.

Plant sale

There will be a plant sale at Wem Millennium Green on Saturday, May 18.
