Women's Institute

The pottery painted by members last month had arrived after firing to our April meeting, and made a magnificent display for all to see. The entries had been judged by the girls in Doodle Alley, and the results were as follows:

nFirst. Jackie Blakely

nSecond: Christine Bolton

nThird: Margaret Barlow

Our speaker for the April meeting, Pen Turner, gave us an illustrated talk of a round the world trip she had made accompanied by a toy penguin. She had made the tour after the obstacles that had prevented her travelling previously had disappeared, so she was able to circumnavigate the globe.

It had taken her six months to plan and organise the trip and despite a few mishaps on the way, she had thoroughly enjoyed it.

The competition – a decorated hard-boiled egg was won by Margaret Barlow, second Christine Bolton and third, Dee Simcock.

Our next meeting is on the May 13 when Jenny Hampton will talk on massage, well-being and self-care.

The competition will be a Handmade Eye Mask (any medium)

Craft Club is on Friday, May 3, 2pm at the Bradbury Centre in Claypit Street.

Town Twinning

The regular monthly meeting of the Twinning Committee was held at the Dodington Lodge, Whitchurch, on Tuesday, April 9.

There were no town council representatives at the meeting.

Secretary, Val Webb, informed the committee that the mayor and councillors had not responded to our enquiry about the municipal gift to be presented to the Maire of Neufchâtel.

Chairman, Andy Allen, who would be required to respond on behalf of Whitchurch Town Council as no councillors were accompanying the visit, felt it would be extremely embarrassing and would portray the town in a poor light if they were unable to reciprocate the Maire’s gift.

There is no programme for the visit as yet, but the time of departure was communicated to the members present. Payment for the voyage is now due.

The Twinning Association will be presenting the comité de jumelage with a selection of preserves and honey sourced from Shropshire and bought in Whitchurch.

The next meeting will be held at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, May 14 at the Dodington Lodge, Whitchurch.

All interested parties are welcome to attend. Membership enquiries to Mrs Webb on 01948 663948.

The trip to France and Neufchâtel will be May 3-6.
