Little Theatre

Tickets are now on sale for Whitchurch Little Theatre’s new comedy ‘Wife After Death’, written by the author of Rising Damp Eric Chappell.

The show will take to the stage at Whitchurch Civic Centre at 7.30pm on Tuesday, April 9 to Friday, April 12. First night tickets are £8 with the remaining three shows all £10.

Comedian and national treasure Dave Thursby has died and on the day of his funeral friends and colleagues gather to pay their respects. There is Harvey (Alan Scutt) who wrote Dave’s material, Harvey’s wife Vi (Jenny Matthews), Kevin (Nigel Davies) who was Dave’s agent and Kevin’s wife Jane (Sarah Radford). Dave’s widow Laura (Katie Goddard) has arranged a funeral to remember complete with horse drawn hearse and attendant dog, Bruno.

But an unfamiliar woman called Kay (Karin Goddard) in flamboyant clothes turns up and a series of revelations makes all the guests ask if they ever knew the ‘real Dave’. Even from beyond the crematorium Dave seems to have the last laugh. It certainly is ‘a funeral to remember’!

The play was described by The British Theatre Guide as ‘a terrific evening of love and laughter’. Tom Conti starred and directed when it was first presented. Therese Hickland directs the Whitchurch version and it promises to have plenty of laughs.

Tickets are on sale at the Civic Centre, at the new Crafty Birds shop in the Bredwood Arcade, Whitchurch, on 01948 663220 or on-line at www.wltg.org.uk

Walkers

The Whitchurch Walkers will be out and about again on Sunday with a bit of ‘Trains, boats and planes’.

Meet at the Sherry Mill Hill car park at 10am and car share to the start of the walk.

This is a circular walk of approximately 10 miles from Bunbury to Beeston and back, mainly across fields and along lanes. Part of the walk will follow the Shropshire Union Canal main line and also offers the opportunity of a bit of train spotting.

As for the planes, you’ll have to come along and find out! After the walk, there will be the opportunity to take a guided tour of Bunbury Mill (admission £4) and see how flour used to be made.

The walk is fairly flat across fields, but there are lots of stiles, many in poor condition. Sorry, but no dogs please. Bring suitable clothing, footwear and a packed lunch.

Flicks

The next film in the popular ‘Flicks in the Sticks’ will be the brilliant ‘Stan and Ollie’ on April 16, starting at 7.30pm.

Steve Coogan and John C Reilly, two brilliant physical comedians, give delightful performances nailing the duo’s body language, mannerisms and routines.

In 1953 with their immense fame on the wane, Stan ‘Laurel’ and Ollie ‘Hardy’ embark on a gruelling farewell tour of British seaside towns.

The tour starts badly; modest music halls, cramped little guesthouses, they struggle for audiences. But a series of TV guest spots rekindle the country’s interest and the buzz grows as they head towards a big London finale.

But old resentments surface, particularly once ‘the wives’, Lucille and Ida, (a hilarious double act in their own right) join them. A charming, poignant, insightful study of lifelong male friendship this is a fitting tribute to the greatest pair of comedians of all time.

Tickets are £4.50 for adults, £3.50 for children and £4 for family. Call 01948 660660 or 07506 724572.
