An annexe will be added to a historic Grade II listed hall in Shropshire.

Lee Old Hall, in Lee, near Ellesmere, applied to add a single storey extension to the building.

Shropshire Council’s North Planning Committee agreed to the proposal at a meeting this week, despite concern from Ellesmere Rural Parish Council.

The council had objected to the proposal, saying: “The parish council has concerns over the current form of the proposed design of the extension to a Grade II* listed building.

“Councillors would prefer to see a separate building perhaps with a glass walkway to link the two buildings.

“The current design proposals are considered to be inappropriate in the context of the main building.”

But the committee went along with the planning officer’s recommendation to approve the plans.

Shannon Franklin, planning case officer, said: “The application seeks listed building consent for the erection of a single storey extension to form an annexe and associated internal alterations affecting the Grade II listed building known as Lee Old Hall.

“The proposed annexe subject to this application would be attached to the main dwelling in the form of an extension to the southern wing of the dwelling which is a 20th century extension to the original hall.

“The annexe will be single storey, containing one bedroom with en-suite bathroom together with living space comprising of a sitting room and a kitchen/dining area.

“The extension will attach to the existing utility of the property enabling reconfiguration of this existing space to provide a utility room and entrance hall to the main dwelling within the same scheme.”

Councillors agreed that as the council’s conservation team was happy with the plans they would go ahead and grant permission.
