School pupils in Whitchurch were given a 'winning' visit last week when Gold Paralympic Medalist Danielle Brown MBE visited.

The event, at Whitchurch Junior Academy in Station Road, was part of the sport programme this academic year, the archery champion – who has won medals at in paralympic and able-bodied events – came along to give her expertise.

Chris Jones, Physical Education lead at the school, says the day gave pupils a taster of a number of sports, and thanked the Paralympic star for coming along.

"We were grateful to spend a morning with all of our pupils and staff," he said.

"Each child participated in a circuit training workshop, where they got to work alongside Danielle, improving their technique and trying out a range of different keep-fit activities. "Alongside this, Danielle delivered an assembly to the whole school, where she shared her success story, what motivated her to take up the sport of Archery and the challenges that she faced as an athlete.

"The children took away many inspiring messages from her assembly, particularly that we can succeed and that we can only be the best of ourselves if we believe in our potential. We hope that Danielle’s visit today has inspired our pupils to try out archery – a sport unfamiliar with so many.

"At WJA, we are constantly looking to explore all sustainability options. We are going to purchase archery equipment, where the children will be invited during the summer term to take part in an archery club. Our aim is to increase levels of participation, improve fitness and promote the love of fitness and sport."
