RESIDENTS are calling for speed reductions following an incident where a young boy was hit by car.

Wrexham Road, running through Abermorddu, is currently restricted to 40mph but concerned residents are calling for the area to be reduced to 30mph in a bid to prevent further accidents.

Owen Hanmer, 11, was hit by a car when he was walking his dog on Tuesday, March 12.

Mum Martine said luckily the woman who was driving the car was going below the speed limit because if she was going 40mph, she believes there would have been a different outcome.

She told the Leader: "I know the lady who was driving and she was very distressed, it's a frightening thing to happen. Children use this road to get to and from school.

"It makes no sense that it's 40mph along here, it's 30mph before and 30mph after, just this short strip. Most people drive the speed limit or above.

"People come flying through sometimes, particularly at night and they come screeching to a halt at the lights. Because the road is wide it's like it's used as a race track.

"I know local councillors have tried before to have the speed limit lowered for this stretch of road and the road that runs parallel to us.

"I'm completely behind the campaign, it's a long five minutes to the end of the road when you hear your son has been knocked over."

Owen suffered a minor head injury and cuts and bruises.

Martine added: "He's a very lucky boy to have gotten away with a glued head and cuts and bruises, it could have been a very different story.

"Luckily two lovely ladies stopped to help and one was a doctor.

"Thank god she was going less than the speed limit.

"Pontybodkin is a similar road and that's 30 so why are we different. It can't wait until someone is seriously injured."

A spokesman for North Wales Police confirmed they received a call at 6.02pm to reports that a boy had been hit by a white Fiat car on Wrexham road.

An ambulance crew arrived and the 11-year-old was taken to hospital for a check up.

The campaign was started by Denise Pope, who is a local resident, and she said action urgently needs to be taken before a life is lost.

She said: "After the incident on Tuesday it is important that the speed limit on Wrexham Road is reduced.

"We want as many people as possible to support us with this as the built-up area is not suitable for a 40mph speed limit.

"Some inconsiderate drivers come down the road at a ridiculous speed through the village. It is not safe for us pedestrians and, with these types of accidents, it is a surprise that nobody has been killed."
